More and more often I am seeing people claiming or believing things that are either extremely rare or impossible. I've met people who believe that they or someone they know can read minds, fly, or turn into a dragon at night. What makes me doubt people's credibility when they state these things (besides the obvious) is that they seem to have an unlimited number of excuses stating why they cannot prove their ability. More often than not it proves they cannot do what they claim to begin with.
The funny thing is, I am not a closed-minded person. I am very open-minded, I am merely not gullable or naive. I want proof. I am not within my respective communities catering to everyone's whim and avoiding hurt feelings. I am working to dispel the misconceptions in society. So is my husband, and quite a few of my friends. We are teachers, and we work daily to improve our knowledge so that we can better answer the questions put to us. We are down-to-earth. People don't like that.
The question is, "Why?" I have my theories. Due to society's standards in this day and age, people are having trouble being what they think is "unique". It seems everyone wants to be different from everyone else, more powerful than everyone else, more noticed than everyone else, more special, more popular, etc., etc., etc. Many are going to the ends of fantasy to find this individuality, frustrated by reality's limitations. They make themselves believe their false claims because of the comfort it gives them, the self-content of knowing they are in some way better than everyone else. They fail to see how unique they are without this kind of nepenthe.
They believe their claims to the point where they will argue their truth with anyone who challenges them. To ridiculous ends, at that. When asked for proof they will either deny to prove it or will try to trick you into believing them using common tools. When offered a real and legitimate offer in the amount of $1,000,000 U.S. dollars, they still give excuses as to why they cannot prove what they can do. I believe unless someone is already a millionare, we as citizens of this country (and of any country for that matter, money is needed everywhere) have enough stresses and bills in everyday life that $1,000,000 would be really nice. That, and if anything in this world could make someone any more 'special' in society's eyes, money is it.
Yet, it is hopeless and pointless to argue with these individuals after a certain point. There are excuses for not proving their ability for a million dollars, ranging from ethical reasons to religious foundations. What makes this skeptical to me is a simple question. If you are unwilling to prove what you can do or show that you are credible for these reasons, why do you make the claim of having the abilities to begin with? Do you revel in temptation? Do you believe that everyone will simply accept you at your word instead of challenging you?
People must realize that claiming extraordinary abilities does not make them more special. It does not create awe and worship in down-to-earth people. True, the gullable will believe it, the naive will believe it. But, then again, they most likely claim similar abilities themselves. Which brings us back to the original problem: Being unique, more so than other people. It is a vicious cycle.
This circle continues to go round and round, fueled by the media and movie-makers. Changes are slowly coming about, but they are taking time due to the endless supply of lifestylers and pretentious delusionists tipping the scales. We will continue to dispel the misconceptions. We are the reality. The reality of real vampirism and paganism. We were born unique and need no fantastical avenue of expression. We are who we are, all within the boundaries of reality. Hopefully, more will continue to realize that being unique is simply being themselves. That is all they need to be.
Perhaps this article has offended you. Perhaps you are angry with me. Perhaps I've hit buttons, truths, sore spots, or other pressure points. Perhaps you agree with me. As long as it evokes thoughts within your mind, I have achieved my goal. If I have not, there is always the future in which to do so.
