The Introduction of Forever Knight
The initial introduction to Forever Knight began with a movie titled “ Nick Knight” starring 80’s heart-throb Rick Springfield. Nick Knight first aired on CBS, August 20, 1989 as a two hour television event and pilot for future series. Nick Knight was a 400 year old vampire who sought mortality, and survived by drinking bottled blood. To repay his debt to human society, Knight became a detective for the Los Angeles police department. His assignment was to investigate a series of murders in which homeless victims were all found drained of their blood. One particular murder had taken place in a museum where a guard is found dead, drained of his blood, and a Mayan goblet stolen. Forensic Pathologist (Robert Harper), confidant of Knight, and his condition, tells Knight that he doesn’t believe that the murder at the museum was committed by the same person. The other victims had their throats slashed, while the guard had two small holes. Not very happy with the decision, Knight is assigned a partner, Donald Schanke (John Kapelos).

Dr. Alyce Hunter (Laura Johnson), the archaeologist who discovered the missing goblet, quickly became curious of Nick Knight. She is also astounded with his knowledge of the ancient ceremonial purposes that the stolen artifact was used for. Knight tells the forensic pathologist that he has another such goblet, and needs two to complete a ritual that can make him mortal again. Dr. Alyce Hunter stumbles upon a book which contains a 100 year old photograph of knight and she quickly assesses his secret. She also discovers that the goblet was used in a ceremony to cure vampirism. As the investigation of the murders continue, it becomes evident to Nick that there are two killers, one human, and one vampire. He believes that Lacroix (Michael Nader), the vampire who transformed him, is behind the murder. |
Lacroix has proven to be an obstacle with Knight’s desire to return to a mortal state, as he terribly resented knight for. In the end, Knights investigation leads him to Jack Fenner, a bloodmobile attendant and not a vampire. Jack admits to the murders because he said hated transients. Lacroix was only responsible for one murder - the one at the museum to gain possession of the goblet. Knight and Lacroix have a confrontation, and Lacroix destroys the goblet and drains Hunter’s blood, setting the scene for Knight to annihilate Lacroix. |

When it finally became a series in May of 1992, there were many transformations from the original pilot. The first thing to change was the name, the former “Nick Knight” had been replaced with “Forever Knight”. The background scene was changed from Los Angeles to Toronto. Nick Knight had aged four centuries and had been given 1228 as the year of his vampire birth. His real name changed from Jean-Pierre (as mentioned in the first pilot) to Nicholas de Brabant. As the series continued, revenants of his past became more and more evident to the audience as they were revealed through flashbacks. In the debut episode, Nicholas (Geraint Wyn Davies - see left photograph) awakens to find himself turned into a vampire by Lucien Lacroix (Nigel Bennet), who would appear in flashbacks throughout the series. |
