Fuseli's Nightmare
"When, doomed to death I shall have expired, I will attend you as a nocturnal fury; and, a ghost, I will attack your faces with my hooked talons (for such is the power of those divinities, the Manes) and brooding upon your restless breasts, I will deprive you of repose by terror." (Horace, 5th Epode)
.

In An Essay on the Incubus, or Nightmare (1753), Dr. John Bond wrote:
The Nightmare generally seizes people sleeping on their backs, and often begins with frightful dreams, which are soon succeeded by a difficult respiration, a violent oppression of the breast, and a total privation of voluntary motion.

Fuseli's painting was first exhibited in 1782 and became synonymous with the visualization of bad dreams in the Romantic era. The painting depicts a young girl sleeping whilst an incubus squats on her stomach looking out.

Introduction to Terror

Your in the middle of a deep sleep, when suddenly, you awaken. You look at the clock, it's 3:15 a.m. "ugh! Why am I up?!" You ask yourself. You have approximately three hours left to sleep before you must pull yourself from slumber, so you nestle your head into your pillow hoping that you will fall back asleep. As you lay there with your eyes closed, you start to feel as though you are not the only one in the room, as if someone is standing beside you, watching you from some corner of the darkness. You lie there as still as you possibly can. You tone down your breathing pattern to lowest format so that you are more able to tune your hearing in on the slightest sound of movement or a breathing pattern outside of your own

A few moments pass, you see nothing, but the feeling that there is another with you is growing even stronger. Random thoughts begin to race through your mind as you lie there in a frozen state. "Did I forget to lock the door?"..then you begin to hear movement..a sound that can be familiarizing with someone wearing a nylon/satin type jacket..the movements sound very slow, as if someone were taking very cautious, slow steps to catch you off guard.

Your eyes are now fixed in the direction of the movement, it's coming from the hall, just right outside your opened bedroom door. Your heart begins to painfully race and your stomach goes into knots as you await for your assailant to make his appearance in the doorway. You finally muster enough courage to muffle out a stern "Who's there?!" "Hello?", Your thinking that maybe your voiceful acknowledgment of their presence will make them leave. Instead, you hear nothing but silence, then, you hear that sound of the material of the jacket again. The feeling of this invisible presence intensifies immensely, and terror begins to grip within you, then when you are at your most heightened fear, your invisible presence manifests visually in your bedroom doorway.

He resembles a male, but his eyes are a glowing red, at that moment you realize you are dealing with something beyond your average cat burglar. This "thing" begins to move closer to you as you feel you are being pulled to "it" at the same time, it is as if you are both afloat. As this "thing" gets closer to you, it suddenly dissipate from it's male figure to a shadowy black mist of nothing, like a billowing black smoke of a fire or a dark ugly storm cloud hovering above you. You try to scream out with everything from within, but you can not. You find that you are only successful with a faint gasp or at most a whisper, You try to try to flee from this thing , but you find yourself completely immobile.

As you lie there like a insect caught in the web of a spider, you feel a weight suppressing your chest, as if you are being pushed into the inner cores of your mattress, breathing becomes difficult, and you feel as if though this is your final moment of life.. Right at that moment, the dark cloud that was hovering above you completely vanishes, it's finally over as well as your sleep for the night.

The passage above was not a fictitious tale taken from some horror book, but rather a brief description of what I have personally experienced with "Sleep Paralysis" or what is also known as "Hag Attacks" or “Night Terrors”. The purpose of this article is give more details of my experiences with this phenomena and to offer my proposal of what I believe to be behind these occurrences and why.

Disclaimer:
I am not a physician, nor am I an expert on Sleep Paralysis. I am merely one speaking on behalf of my own observations and my experiences with this condition. If you frequently experience these attacks, I highly advise that you seek attention from your physician before grasping alternative concepts such as mine. Every case is different, and it is possible that your encounters may be caused by a legitimate medical condition that can be brought under reticence through medication or other methods directed by your physician. But, if you have exhausted all means of the medical aspect to no avail in dealing with sleep paralysis and you have a open mind, then perhaps this article will serve to be beneficial to you.

What is Sleep Paralysis?

Before I indulge everyone with my experiences with this phenomena, I would like for all of you to become familiar with the medical physiognomy of Sleep Paralysis so you will better understand my discord with it later in this writing.

From a medical perspective, there are two classifications that Sleep Paralysis currently falls under. The first is what is called Common Sleep Paralysis, which is the most typical type, and the second one is Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis (most often affiliated with night terrors, hag attacks, etc.). The distinction between the two is the hypnagogic state. The Hypnagogic State in term, is the state between being awake and falling asleep. For some individuals, this is a time when auditory and visual hallucinations can take place. Also, another term to briefly mention is the opposite of the hypnagogic state, the hypnopompic state. The Hypnopompic State is the stage between being asleep and waking up. With that said, let’s look at the two classifications a little further in Depth.

Common Sleep Paralysis - Occurs, for most individuals, during R.E.M. State, the body releases hormones that paralyze the body to keep it from acting out dreams, thereby acting as a natural safety net to keep ourselves contained from doing any physical harm to ourselves during slumber. These hormones normally wear off before our dreams come to a final conclusion and we wake up with full utilization of all of our body functions. With Common Sleep Paralysis, a individual will awaken before these hormones have fully retreated, and they will experience a paralyzing sensation that will last from anywhere between a second to a minute in total, however, there have been instances where individuals have experienced Common Sleep Paralysis for a little longer than a minute.

Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis - Occurs mostly during the hpynopompic state and the individual may experience hallucinations after they are awakened from sleep to find themselves paralyzed. Individuals undergoing this will at times also have the sense of a evil or fearful presence in the room with them. Some will even further experience the sensation of someone or something sitting on them and they will feel as though they are suffocating or dying. Experiencing this can cause a person much anxiety and fear, but there is no physical harm involved. These attacks can last up to 8 minutes long, and sometimes even longer, and due to the nightmarish hallucinations, it is usually an extremely frightening experience. To the person caught in this state, it is extremely realistic and intense.

Sleep Paralysis is a fairly new observation taken on by researchers roughly over the past decade. However, although researchers can now explain what occurs on the physical level during an episode of sleep paralysis, to date, there is no substantial or conclusive evidence as to why or what is behind this strange phenomenon.

Myths, Legends, and Lectures

Over the centuries, nightmares and or hag attacks, have deep roots in many myths, legends and writings in almost every culture, from every time. In the ancient Hebrew beliefs, Lilith, a female demon, and the mother of all succubae and incubae, who like her, would visit “those men who sleep alone” seducing men through their dreams to steal their semen, or assault them by sitting on their chests with such a weight to crush them. From the semen that is stolen, it is said that it is used to give birth to a part human and part ethereal breed known as Lilim (Babylonian-Assyrian lilu/incubus and lilitu/succubus). These entities could appear in physical form, or in void, which ever they so chose, and they too, committed the same acts of nightly visitations to men, just as their mother Lilith had done. Some of these lilim were described as imp-like, or as satyr, and at times, reptilian. They could also appear as a handsome male or beautiful woman, or hideous and ugly. Typically, they could choose any form of their liking.

Then there is the Mara, or the Slavic Mora, a terrible night visitor that crushes or oppresses it’s victims, normally taking the shape of a beautiful woman or a truly hideous old hag. Mara comes from the Anglo-Saxon neaht (or nicht) and the verb merran (to crush), which also provides root for nightmare (the nicht mara) and mara (a succubus or incubus); the word was widely used in Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden. The mara was feared from ancient times, known to enter the room of sleepers and to bring them dreadful dreams. At times, the creature appeared as a horse, placing it’s fore hoofs on the sleeper’s chest, glaring at the poor soul with gleaming red eyes. As with the Alp, the mara has close associations with vampires through it’s nocturnal predations and, in some areas, it’s fondness for blood. According to the southern slavs, once the mara drinks the blood of a man, she will fall in love with him and forever plaguing his slumbers. She is also fond of sucking the breasts of children. [Matthew Bunson, The Vampire Encyclopedia. Pg. 168-169]

In Greece and Rome, the incubus was identified with gods of the forest and woodland, such as Pan, whose attacks were affiliated with panic. Pan was also known as an instigator of dreams and visions. In Newfoundland there is the tradition of Ag Rog, the Old Hag, who sits on her sleeping victim’’s chest to crush out their breath. In the West Indies, the Kokma are spirits of dead babies that also come to sit on a person’’s chest and clutch at their throat. The victim is paralyzed with fear and attempts to cry out to attract someone who will scare away the malevolent spirit. Many similar myths have been present in Western culture for 2000 years and seem to be built around a common set of experiences. [Simon A. J. Winder] In addition, the Greeks also had their version: pnigalion (the choker) and the barychnas (the heavy breather) troubling would-be sleepers (Coren, 1996). The sensations brought about by these entities are shared among every culture's explanation for the phenomenon, which include: pressure on the upper chest area, the inability to neither move nor speak, and overwhelming anxiety. In Japan, Kanashibara ("to tie with an iron rope") is a common and widely known experience with an experienced rate of 39.8% out of a population of 635 university students (Olgivie & Harsh, 1994)[satjdadham.org]

In ancient Egypt, Ka was the name for the astral being, the spiritual double which continued to exist after death among the living. One example of this belief was taught by lecturer, Vincent Hillyer. Vincent Hillyer’s theory of vampirism was based upon the existence of the astral body, a subtle duplicate of the physical body, or Ka, as used by the ancient Egyptians. The literature of psychic research has documented the travels of the astral body normally while a person is asleep. The astral body needs the physical body as it’’s home, and after death of the physical body, the astral body tried to feed the body to keep it from decaying. The food source being living humans. Another Ancient Assyrian myth was the Ekimmu The Sumerians described the Ekimmu as demonic, phantom-like entities that roamed the earth, unable to obtain solace, searching for victims. They were also referenced as “evil wind gusts” and according to Sumerian mythology, wind is often shown as a expression of psychic or apparitional power. Many similar myths have been present in Western culture for 2000 years and seem to be built around a common set of experiences.

My Encounter

Around the age of four, I began to realize that were more than just humans, animals and plant life inhabiting this earth, it was a place shared with ethereal entities as well. Some of these souls were good and just passing through, while others perhaps, were meant to be guides. However, there were others who were cruel, malicious, whose only intent was to reek havoc and create chaos, (your typical poltergeist), and then there were some who were never human at all, and these soulless entities to me, were the most evil and feared of all.

My first fearful episode transpired at that age during a afternoon of play. I was sitting in the hallway in the upstairs of our home outside my mother's bedroom door. My mother was continuously plagued with Migraines, and most of time, she was confined to the pitch blackness of her bedroom. So, I would often sit outside of her bedroom door in attempt to remain as close to her as I could get, as I missed her terribly. I was left in the care of my older brother who was about 14 at the time, and I remember him often reminding me to be very quiet, because any noise would make mommy feel more ill. So, in hopes that she would get better, I would be as quiet as I possibly could be. This one particular afternoon, I was outside her door coloring her a picture. I was going to slide it underneath the door thinking that she would get it and it would make her feel better. All of a sudden, I had the sense that someone was behind me, so I looked up from my coloring, but seen nothing. So, I continued coloring, but the feeling of an evil presence grew ever stronger and stronger. Finally, when it was so severe, I stopped to look up. And there before me was a black translucent shadow hovering over the stairwell, and as humourous as this may sound, it precisely resembled the wraiths that were used in LOTR , it remained there for a few moments before it over passed me and went straight through my mother’s bedroom door.

I was so fear stricken of what I had seen, I could not yell, nor could I move. When I finally could, I left out a scream that probably could have awakened the dead. My brother came rushing up the stairs to quiet me, and he quickly took me down to the living room. He then asked me what was wrong with me, and I quickly related all that I had seen to him. He told me to remain in the living room while he left to check on her. He soon came back and told me she was fine and that what I had seen must have been eye trickery, and then he scolded me for misbehaving. As time passed, what I had seen not only manifested attacks upon my mother, but on my brother and my self as well. After many torturous months of this activity, my mother sought help. I can not remember who exactly these people were, but they visited our home and told us they could help us. They gave instructions to my mother, my brother, and I to stand within a circle as they stood outside another circle surrounding us. They told us to remain silent and to meditate on something positive and no matter what took place, we were not under any circumstances, to step outside of that circle. As they began to say words in a unfamiliar language repetitiously, We began to hear what was like four or five very heavy people stomping in the room above us and after a few moments, you could hear them running down the stairs. I was reminded to keep my eyes closed and to meditate, and as I had my head buried into my mothers dress, I felt what was like a very cold rush of wind. It was followed by our outside door opening and slamming shut. It was then, over. What ever had been inhabiting our home with terror, was then gone, or so we thought.

Considerable time had passed, and all that we had experienced faded distantly in our minds. We lived in a new home, new town, and made new acquaintances. We were back to living normal, every day lives. That was until I was around 7 years of age, and it inaugurated again. I had been outside playing and was called to come in for the night. Course, rule of the house was to immediately to take a bath after being outside. So, I went to my room, grabbed my pj’s and headed down the hall to the bathroom. As I was on my way, I heard a voice say “Larae, I am coming for you”. I thought nothing more of than it being my brothers out to scare me as they were infamous for doing. I just said, “I knowit’s you two, so knock it off”. I waited for a few moments to see if they would spill out of the hall closet in laughter as they normally did, but, no sign of the two jokers. So I opened the hallway door and found no one. Still convinced that it was them, I just brushed it off and continued to the bathroom to take my bath. After my bath, I watched a little bit of television and went to bed a few hours later. Approximately around 3:00 a.m., I suddenly awoke to a feeling of someone or something being in the room with me, and I sat straight up in bed. In the hallway, just outside my bedroom door, I could hear what I thought to be movement. I continued to sit there just watching for a sign of someone to walk by...but nothing. I began to feel more fearful, and then, this female silhouette appeared in the threshold of my bedroom. I thought for a moment that perhaps it was my mother so I said “mom, is that you?” It was at that moment when this being stepped inside my bedroom and it’s eyes were a glowing red, I suddenly realized that this was not my mother. It suddenly changed form from female to male as it moved closer to approaching my bedside, then, it’s final transition was no more than that of a dark, floating shadowy mist, it then scooped up under my body lifting me up off the mattress. I was holding on to the handle on the side of the mattress to restrain myself from being taken anywhere. I tried to scream, but all I could manage was a faint whisper, I was unable to move at all, and after what seemed to be an eternity, it finally released me dropping me back on to the mattress as it disappeared into thin air.

I didn’t waste a moment! I fled from that room like a bat out of hell. I went into the living room where my oldest brother was snoring away on the sofa. Still hysterically shaken up by my experience, I vigorously shook him to awaken him. Once I had him somewhat conscious, I began to tell him what happened. He told me that it was just a dream and that I needed to go back to bed. I begged and pleaded for him to get up, and after a few minutes, he got up, grabbed me by the arm and told me he had enough of this and he was dragging me back to my bedroom. I immediately went into a hysterical fit and began to fight with him and I refused to go back in that room at any cost. A thousand lashings at that point, would have been a lot better to me then having to return to that room. It wasn’t long before my mother came out to the living room and asked what the hell was going on, and did we know that it was 3:30 a.m. My brother related all to my mother of how I came and woke him up over a nightmare, and I interrupted and told my mother that it was not a nightmare, it was real! She asked me to describe to her what I had seen, so I told her from start to finish of my terrifying ordeal. She said nothing for a few moments and only stared at my brother as if though she was amazed or shocked at what I had told her. She told me to just come to bed with her. It was much later in my adult hood that my mother asked me if I remembered that particular incident, and of course, I have never forgotten, and I told her yes. She told me that she had something to tell me about that. That there was more to it than just what had taken place that night with me. So I said, “mom, what was it?” and she said..Well, what is was, is still a mystery to me, maybe it was a demon, or some work of witchcraft, but I know you just did not invent that from your imagination, nor were you just dreaming. She continued to tell me that she knew it wasn’t, because a week prior to my incident, while my step-sister was visiting, she occupied my room since I was off spending the week at my grandmothers. She said that my step-sister had awakened around the same time as I had, and I described the same exact thing to a T as she had with her experience. My mother told me she just never told me because she just felt that it wouldn’t have done anything but upset me more so. So, it was kept hushed.

To present date, I have had a few occasions here and there where I have awakened from a deep sleep to feel something in the room with me, but..I have not suffered a heavy attack of paralysis or inabilities to talk since my late twenties. I feel that I owe a big thank you to the vampire community for that. It was not a easy pill for me to swallow, but once I absorbed it into my system, I was finally able to rid myself of these attacks. Which leads to my explanation, but before I get ahead of myself with that, I want to pin point why, if you have not already been able to distinguish the difference already, I disagree with the medical aspect regarding my encounters.

1. Although the gist of my attacks were in the middle of the night, there were other times when I was fully conscious when I seen and felt a presence.

2. There were others beside myself that seen, sensed, or was attacked by the same entity. By far can anyone have the same over active imagination, or describe the same exact thing and constitute it as a nightmare or coincidence.

Conclusion

I sincerely suspect that the experiences that I had were not a form of sleep paralysis, but were the result of some form of psychic attack. I feel that these attacks were most likely carried out by someone with this type of psychic ability or even perhaps an astral being. Depending on beliefs, some could say that that it was the act of psychic vampire. Although the psychic vampire and astral vampire are somewhat similar in their methods, there is a quite a distinction between those two in the way I am presenting it. I believe that it is possible for a soul to survive on the lower level of the astral planes long after their physical body has decomposed, (such as the ka in the Egyptian belief) and that they must feed off the living’s energy to sustain them. This type of vampire, I could be considered to be a astral vampire.

The psychic or psi vampire, are still bound to their physical body, they are mortal in every sense of the word, but they can leave their body and surf the astral planes at will. However, there are those that do this unknowingly, and they are called unintentional psychic vampires. You may be wondering why such an attack would be warranted by one of these vampires, so I will briefly explain.

Psychic vampires, be they unintentional or intentional, possess a substantial depletion of energy that they can not obtain from table nourishments alone. This energy leak could be caused possibly by a leak, or hole, in their chakras, however, this is just one suggestion. This causes them to become physically imbalanced and very prone to illnesses, such as headaches, mood swings, depression, fatigue, and according to some other reports that I am quite unable to verify, it has been said that it can result in death. The only way for them to acquire and maintain good health is to feed upon the pranic energy that is produced by humans, animals, plants, elements, stones, radio waves, etc. The majority of psychic or psi vampires have a high recognition of their needs, but they do not condone such attacks as I have encountered. They seek out consenting donors, or feed off of a crowd of many, not just one individual. They realize that this can indeed harm a individual on a one to one base, which is not their in their genuine interest at all. They will go the distance to find other sources such as elemental energy and such as I have mentioned above. It is evident all through out the plethora of real vampire sites and forums that are out there that they wish to harm none, they only wish to establish assistance to those who have come to realization of what they are, and what they are doing and to successfully achieve balance for both vampire and participant during the extraction or exchange of energy, as well as other areas of support.

But unfortunately, there are some out there who do not realize what they are or what they are doing, these of course would be your unintentional psychic vampires. Then there is the handful who know what they are and do it deliberately with no regards to anyone. It is important to remember though, that they carry out these malicious acts with much condemnation from the vampire community on a whole. The preferred method that these malicious and unintentional psychic vampires attack is through osmosis, usually centered at the solar plexus or the heart chakra, to instill fear and awaken the victim, after they extract the energy that satisfies them, they generally dissipate and the victim falls back to sleep, and awakens the next morning, slightly tired due to the loss of energy, most of which would have been replaced. These attacks seem to occur between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. because that is when people have the highest measure of life force available in their bodies. Most of these attacks are known to take place at night, but although it is not common, they can attack during the day. There is also a great possibility that such attacks can be carried out by someone non-vampiric in the occultic arts. Such things can be accomplished by one that knows the arts quite well. However, with my encounters, I believe the first initial introduction was that of a bodiless, astral vampire, while the other attacks were generated from a unintentional source..the suspect, my stepfather. Since my mother and him have been divorced, her health has improved dramatically. No more fatigue, migraines, or depleted platelet problems. She has even told me that she feels better now at 58, then she did at 30. My step-father’s new wife, who was once robust and energetic, suffers the same lethargic, headachey, depressive conditions my mother once did.. Hmmm...I wonder why? Since all connection has broken with him, I no longer suffer these attacks, but that could also be attributed to my awareness of what is actually going on and my ability to block such attacks from such said persons or entities. Bottom line, these vampires are real, and they do indeed exist.
