I really didn't know WHERE to put a thread like this so I thought, Dreamscapes would be a good somewhere since it deals with your lack of dreaming/sleep, period.
This is the second straight night that I have been up, so far, until 6:15 a.m (Central US Time). There have been more nights like this, just recently, I've had a lower tolerance for them. Normally I don't mind because I'm not the only one up but now, video games and playing with my friend's iTunes can only keep me busy for so long. My point of this would be can anyone give me any suggestions on how to make these insomniac nights less frequent becasue I start my new job on Monday and I can't pull my hours successfully if I stay up until it's time to go...I'm open to anything at this point in time.
Thank you. |

I have suffered a good handful plus nights of insomnia, and the best advice to give is dont sit in front of your computer, dont try to read a book. The best thing to do is to lay in bed, get comfy and just try to sleep, you may toss and turn, but eventually sleep comes. If not, tylenol PMs always worked for me.
When you stay up keeping yourself busy, it keeps your body thinking it shouldnt sleep. |

Hey. I posted this little article about insomnia a while back. Try some of the suggestions and see if they work. The number one thing to do though, is don't fixate on it, or you will be doing nothing but convincing youself that you can't sleep.

As many others, I too have a long history of insomnia. In the past I've tried just about every remedy and tactic to quell the symptoms, some with effect and some with not. Now, I find that an herbal supplement and when necessary a strong chamomile tea work wonders for me.
I will relate that others I'm aquainted with who also have this problem, use varying methods and settings for their sleep. I for instance absolutely cannot sleep in a dead silent room. I need a radio or TV active to lull me to sleep. This is not the case for all I'm aware, but it does bring to the surface that everybody is different. What works for me, might not work for others. I do believe that Kushiel hit the nail on the head. Try not to fixate on it. That is a sure-fire method of staying awake and getting wound up. At least for me that is.
Once I discovered the method that worked the best, I decided to stick with it. Even in those times when it seems to wain in effect. It always takes hold again, eventually.
Peace>

I agree with allin you should find a method that works for you a stick to it. I am also like him in the fact that I need a radio playing to allow sleep to come. Before I found the method that worked for me I stayed up for 3 or 4 days at a time it took its tole on me I have gotten these dark rings around my eyes from the lack of rest but most people say that they bring out my eyes so good for me . For me I found that letting my mind wander when I lay down works wonders for letting sleep come. |

My question for you damagedroses is this. Are you worried about something before you fall asleep? You mentioned that you start a new job on Monday, hey wait is that today. I wonder if the stress is what is keeping you awake at night.
I do question the need for drugs or alcohol to help you sleep. They may be a quick fix but in the long run they will only cause more issues. If you think you need sleeping pills to help you please see your doctor first. Secondly mixing sleeping pills with alcohol can be a deadly combination. I strongly recommend that you find some other way to cope with your insomnia.
I have never been a good sleeper at night. In fact for me to get any sound sleep I must get it during the day. I have been like that since birth, I have an aunt who is the same way. I used to wonder if I was actually her child but have been assured that I am not.
Personally I find that shutting off the mind for a while helps me the most. Meditating and clearing the mind of all the stresses of the day is the best cure for what ails you. At least in my experiences it has been.
If you would like some tips I can give you specifics. Just make sure that whatever method you use that you are being careful and taking care of yourself. Don't do anything that could harm you in the end. |

Hmmm I strongly don't advise anytime of drugs, but I do agree with the idea of meditation. Personally I like to practise Tai-chi before going to sleep. I know it makes me really energetic, but it allows me to focus on what needs to be done and sleep is one of them. Thats probably why you havnt heard from me at 2 a.m . |

I read all of your posts, and I have tried most of things mentioned. I went to a doctor and he gave me some pills, I don't advice pills...they worked, but a month later he gave stronger onces because the other ones stopped working. In adition when I waked up I was tired. Alcohol works but you might become an alcoholic! and if you have work the next morning it is not the best opcion.
If I trie to fall asleep reading a book...I read the Davinci code in one night!
I agree with Nyboria. Sometimes when I go to sleep I have so much in my head I stay up all night. try some meditaion or as Drakonis said Tai-chi. This will make you focus on your body and put aside all issues your might have.
Making some excercise works for me also, running is very good.
Try to massage your face and your neck. |

Massages due help out alot before trying to go to sleep. Have you tried sleeoing in different ways. I know I used to be able to only sleep on my back then it moved to my stomach and now I can only fall asleep on my side. |

I've had insomnia all my life, mainly due to an over active mind and paranoid feelings, worry etc.
Earlier this year I had a two week bout, only sleeping maybe a total of up to 10 hours in 14 days, so it can get pretty bad but what I find is, the more you think you won't get to sleep, the less likely it is to happen.
Try not to worry, find a comfortable position, and actually, try to find something cool to place across or against your face or head, the cooling effect can be very soothing and help calm you.
Make sure your bedclothes are comfortable too, I've found that theres a subcoincious irritability that keeps a person awake if there are little annoyances in the body like heat, umcomtorability etc that you only bearly notice but your body does.
Noise is also a factor if irritability is whats keepign you awake, some people like a certain level of noise or like me, silence helps alot. It could be a sound or noise too.
Then what Nyboria said about anxiety, it causes upset in the body that keeps it awake, try eating or drinking something soothing like teas and light snacks that help settle you.
I'm afraid I'm not the best person to ask since I have enough trouble sleeping myself but I think it really comes down to just trying to be at peace and beign as comfortable as possible and see what happens, if you still can't sleep then try and find what worrying you and sort it as best you can. |

Sad to say, I'm suffering somewhat of the same thing. Normally I am a sleep-addict, and can fall asleep at any time, but ever since I've come home for the summer I haven't been able to get tired until at least 4am [EST].
I've been trying to get to bed earlier, but I end up just laying there listening to music and daydreaming until my body finally gives in. It's also becoming increasingly difficult to try and meditate.
Hopefully it's just a change of place that I need to get used to, as I am here for another three months. I hope you're able to kick the insomnia, I wish I had some help to give you ;/.
