Language

- Please keep slang/internet shorthand off of the site, and use proper English wherever possible. Not all of our users may be native English speakers, and using proper English will allow translation programs to produce the best possible translation.

- Profanity is not disallowed, but please keep it at a minimum. If it is excessive, it will be removed.

Posting

Tips on Posting:
Remember when posting that your words represent you. What kind of words you use, casual, formal, misspelled or correctly spelled words and even grammar affects how people see you.

All that we have to go on are your words, not how you mean them to sound. Because you cannot give any real sense of inflection, dry humor, sarcasm and poorly chosen words can and sometimes do haunt you.

Be precise in your word use when you can. The difference between "I think" and "I know" is huge in a world dependent on written words alone.

Try not to post when you're emotional. Chances are you'll get across the wrong point or be unclear. It's best to take a deep breath and calm down before you post.

Re-read your post before you send it out for everyone else to read. To preview your post, click on "preview post" button once. This will allow you to a proofread your post and preview as it will be seen on the forum. If you accidentally hit post before you realize you can always go back and "edit" your post to make any needed corrections.

Follow all the rules. Darkness Embraced Guidelines and Policies are clearly posted. Breaking the rules takes away all your hard work in posting because they get pulled right away. The purpose of the following section is to give some pointers on how to and how not to post, as well as how to read a post and respond to it without getting yourself into any trouble you had not intended.

Posting Do'd and Dont's:
When posting the first thing to do is to think about what it is you want to say. Not just what words, but what is the message you want to get across. You need to be sure that the purpose of your post is clear. Below are two sample introductory posts.

Hiya PEEPS. I m reely into this cool stuff called vampirism n its great n my friends have been doing it for like ever and stuff. I've been do n it for a while now and I m really good 2. So, I m goin to be a cool vampire and flutter off like a bat. Later.

Hi, everyone. My name's Chris. I'm a psi/empath, and I've been studying for a while now with some of my friends who are more experienced with vampirism and members of a organization. It's been about a year since I have realized what I am. I'm new to this site and wanted to let everyone know I'm here and will be posting, and let you in on a little bit about me. Thanks, and I'll be seeing you around.

Obviously the first post is not as good as the second post though they say almost the same things. The first post is scattered, unclear, filled with spelling errors and "Internet Shorthand." While it can be understood that it's an introduction you don't get much out of it compared to the time you need to take to read it.

The second post is very clear, to the point, and you actually learn a little bit about this person. Also, while it's perfectly ok to use slang, make jokes, and have fun, it's best to also portray yourself as an intelligent person. While "Chrisl" could have made a joke or two, as an introduction he is trying to get right to the point of the matter, he's here and will be posting under this name. He follows all of the above rules and immediately people get a better opinion of Chris than of the first post.

Reading a Post:

This too can be a tricky event. Here are a couple of simple tips that will save you time and aggravation when reading someone else's post, or even when re-reading your own.

- Try to take your time reading a post. When reading too quickly little nuances are missed and words can be misinterpreted.
- If you have any questions about a post, ask them before deciding what the poster meant. Vague questions cannot result in exact answers, so it's best to get the author to be clear so you can be too.

Responding to a Post:

In many ways responding to a post is the same as writing your own post. However, since there are some important differences, it needs to be covered.

If you decide you want to respond to it, read it again. Make sure you know exactly what it's saying so you can give the best reply possible.

Follow all the tips on writing a post above.

Stay on topic!! This can often be the hardest thing to do because so many of us want to say so much. If the response isn't in reply to a post, put up one of your own and see if anyone responds. Don't distract from someone else's conversation if you don't have to.

- Ensure that your New Topics are in the correct forum. If your topic does not fit with the forum you post it in, it will be moved at our discretion.

- If you are replying to a topic that already exists, please stay on topic. Ensuring that a topic is all on the same subject will make following the conversation much easier.

Respecting the Individual

Do not personally attack any individual, group, or domain on Darkness Embraced. Use of names are not permitted. Personal vendettas are not welcomed here. There is no excuse or reason to attack another user's race, heritage, nationality, religion, ancestry, age, gender, physical characteristics, or anything else. Please respect every individual here. Failure to do so will result in an immediate suspension

Spamming (multiple copies of a message in one forums or multiple forums

Please do not post the same message or post the same content more than once. Transmitting data across modem lines can take several seconds before completion; repeatedly clicking on the post button does not speed up that transmission. All duplicate messages will be deleted without notice or explanation with only the original left posted. By duplicate, we mean the same message in a given forum numerous times and/or the same message or content in more than one forum. If you would like to post an announcement of general interest to all, the Vein Yard is the appropriate place.

Suspension of posting privileges

Repeated and/or serious violations of our guidelines, attacks (whether by posting or e-mail) on staff or anyone who posts here, or community disruption of any sort may result in the suspension of posting privileges at this site. The decision to suspend privileges can be made only by the webmaster. Regardless of the reasons, once posting privileges are suspended, no further forum posts will be allowed regardless of content or intent. Any posts made by anyone whose posting privileges have been suspended will be pulled without comment. Reinstatement of privileges must be addressed to the webmaster only, via e-mail or private message.

I've been on a lot of forum sites and let me just say, and I'm sure that I'm not the first to congratulate you on an outstanding job in coming up with standards and suggestions to newcomers. I was laughing actually as I was reading some of this because it follows the same etiquette that I require when I speak with someone online. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Very WELL DONE.

I must say that I too am EXTREMELY impressed with the site and these guidelines. I feel that from what little I've been able to read today (new member) I will be glued to this site until I can actually keep up with all that it delivers!!! Congratulations on a such a great place to come to learn and discover...

I agree. Larae has done a wonderful job with this site. And these regulations are needed, especially with other members from other countries that use translator programs. Without the proper grammer and spelling, they would not completely understand what it is your trying to get across. I sometimes misspell words myself. but I try to see the mistakes before I submit.

I actually wanted to thank Larae for this topic because I'm new (which I've mentioned before on other boards) but I wanted to read the guidelines because I'm worried that I will offend or come across as just a little girl interested in vampires because of horror movies or something. Which is not the case.
I wanted to make sure that I am following post regulations because I love it here and I don't want my posting privelages suspended.
Blessed be~
Rachel

what a perfect time to bump up this thread. It's hard to remember all the time that the way the words sound in our heads can be taken completely different.
